NEW
Erebus Disaster 30th anniversary -
On 28 November 1979 257 people were killed when Air New Zealand Flight
TE901 crashed into the side of Mt Erebus, Antarctica. Our revamped topic
tells the story of the Erebus disaster from the first Antarctic
sightseeing flights operated by Air New Zealand, to the airline's recent
apology to families of victims of the Erebus disaster. Learn more about
the events leading up to the crash of Flight TE901 on 28th November
1979, the investigation and inquiry that followed, and the ongoing
debate over who was at fault. There are also new sections on how we
first heard the news that something was wrong with Flight TE901 and how
the disaster has been memorialised. See it all here:

Battle of the River Plate 70th anniversary -
When HMS Achilles opened fire on the German 'pocket battleship' Admiral
Graf Spee on 13 December 1939, it became the first NZ unit to engage the
enemy in the Second World War. Seventy years on, the Battle of the River
Plate still holds a special place in this country's naval history. See
more here (includes sound recordings from the BBC and those who were
there):

The War in Wanganui -
The confusion and uncertainty that had surrounded the New Zealand
Company's land purchases in Wanganui erupted into violence in the autumn
and winter of 1847. The conflict here also involved longstanding
rivalries between upper and lower Whanganui River Maori. See more here:

HISTORY IN THE CLASSROOM
NCEA 1 - check out our overview and related topics for the 'Search for
Security' theme here: http://tinyurl.com/yjkxqus
NCEA 3 - we've recently launched a new section to support the 'New
Zealand in the 19th Century' theme. This includes a brief history
divided into three periods (1800-40; 1840-70; 1870-1900) and revision
ideas for teachers and students: http://tinyurl.com/yk8fcpb
ALSO IN THE NEWS
Soccer World Cup -
As New Zealand celebrates its qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup,
we look back to 1981-82, when soccer first seized the country's
imagination. After slogging through an epic qualifying schedule of 15
games, the 'All Whites' took on the best in the world at the 1982 finals
in Spain.

Movember -
Today most New Zealand men are clean-shaven (though an increasing number
grow moustaches especially for the month of 'Movember'). That wasn't
always the case. Moustaches have come and gone as Kiwi blokes have shown
themselves to be dedicated followers of fashion.
