It was adopted in 1902, replacing the Union Jack. Between 1834 and 1840, the Flag of the United Tribes was recognised as our first 'national' flag. Waitangi Day 2010 also marked the first official recognition of the national Maori flag. Read more about our flags here: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/flags-of-new-zealand The 1960s Fifty years ago most Kiwis enjoyed a standard of living that was the envy of other nations. During the 1960s the arrival of TV and jet airliners shrank our world, and New Zealanders began to express themselves on a range of international issues, including opposition to the Vietnam War. In this feature we provide an overview of the decade and a year-by-year breakdown of some of the key events. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/the-1960s - as a related extra to the 1960s topic we've put together this slideshow on the Golden Age of Crown Lynn: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/node/14408 Monowai - the ship that saved Anne Frank's father New Zealand has a small connection to the poignant story of Anne Frank, via her father, Otto, and the merchant ship TSS Monowai. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/photo/monowai-and-anne-franks-father NEW SITE FEATURES Search page widget If you do a search using the NZHistory.net.nz search engine you will now get results from the entire Digital New Zealand collection appearing on the right of the results page. For example, here is a search on 'monowai': http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/search?keys=monowai&op=Search Discussion forum - Ask a question Some of you might remember that NZHistory.net.nz used to run a discussion forum. We are now revisiting the idea in a limited way, with a forum for people to ask NZ history-related questions. The idea is that members of the public can ask a question and one of us, or another visitor, can help them answer it. You will need to register to post a question, but anyone can post a response (note unregistered posts will be moderated). Try it out here: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/ask-a-question We hope you enjoy these new topics and features. Feedback to info@nzhistory.net.nz welcome NZHistory team
